Catholic Charities of Louisville is the social-service arm of the Archdiocese of Louisville. We provide help and create hope for the poor and vulnerable through a wide range of programs, assisting clients of all races, backgrounds and beliefs. 

Job Skills / Requirements

Summer Internship; approximately 11 weeks
3 positions available
Monday - Thursday; 25 hours/week
Salary: $19.00/hour + $50.00/week gasoline stipend

The Refugee School Impact Intern will work directly with the MRS Youth Team to provide support before, during, and after the 6-week summer program. Interns will learn how to plan and execute summer program tasks, assist MRS staff with their needs, assist JCPS teachers in the classroom, and be a support to the students. The interns may help with interpretation needs throughout the summer program. They will also help with set-up and clean-up as needed. Interns will assist MRS staff with school registration needs and activity time once summer program ends. The position lasts for 11 weeks throughout the summer working part-time. 

Essential Duties and Tasks: 
 
  1. Assist Catholic Charities Youth Team in organizing and executing Summer Program for newly-arrived refugee children ages 6-17 (Mondays-Wednesdays)
  2. Help lead small group discussions about safe dating with teens (Thursdays)
  3. Assist ESL teachers in classrooms 
  4. Attend field trips, helping to supervise kids 
  5. Occasionally help with simple interpretation if needed between kids and Catholic Charities staff
  6. Set up and clean up breakfast, lunch, and afternoon activities at Summer Program
  7. Encourage kids and youth to participate in activities 
  8. Be a leader and example for kids, modeling respectful behavior  
  9. Assist youth team with field trips and school registration tasks for new clients July 15-August 4
EFFORT:
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time 
  • Specific vision abilities include close and distant vision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work under pressure, effectively utilize time and resources, and use sound judgment when making decisions 
  • Ability to travel frequently within the community ($50 transportation stipend)
  • Ability to accurately examine and analyze information.
  • Significant ability to multi-task and respond to deadlines 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  
 
  • Fluency in  Spanish, Kinyarwanda, Swahili, Dari and/or Pashto is preferred 
  • Cultural competency and an intimate knowledge of relevant refugee and immigrant communities in Louisville preferred
