Indigent Burial Coordinator (Community Support Services)

Overview

The Indigent Burial Coordinator works as part of the Mission team, to fulfill the responsibilities assigned to Catholic Charities in collaboration with Louisville Metro Government and the Office of the Coroner in connection with indigent burials. The Indigent Burial Coordinator will work with the CCL Development Team to recruit volunteers from schools, parishes, and other community groups to support the Indigent Burial Program and to generate funds for headstones and other program needs.

Salary: $45,000/annual

Job Skills / Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS:

1. Participate as an active member of the Community Support Services team, which includes attending meetings and working collaboratively.

2. Cooperate closely with the Development Team, particularly the Volunteer and In-Kind Coordinator and Community Engagement Coordinator, to meet the needs for resources and volunteers for the Indigent Burial program in conjunction with all CCL protocols and other agency needs.

3. Communicate with hospitals, hospice, nursing homes, and the Office of the Coroner with respect to individuals who reside in and die in Jefferson County and may qualify for indigent burial services;

4. Place advertisements in the Courier-Journal, online, and other media as appropriate to locate next of kin, and communicate at least weekly with the Office of the Coroner as to locating next of kin;

5. Confer and communicate with individuals who purport to stand as next of kin for deceased individuals as to whether the deceased qualifies for indigent burial services; obtain completed paperwork for indigent services, cremation, and reimbursement as appropriate.

6. Work in collaboration with the Office of the Coroner, Louisville Metro Parks Department, and Owen Funeral Homes to schedule indigent burial services on a weekly basis.

7. Make sure all decedents, with no families, are checked on with Veterans Affairs and make sure all qualified veterans are buried at State or National Cemetery.

8. Work with different religious leaders and institutions in order to make sure all religious and cultural customs are respected and practiced.

9. Coordinate volunteer participation at scheduled services, and prepare written program for services.

10. Report relevant deaths to Probation and Parole and check in with LMPD Missing Person Unit on open cases.

11. Maintain records as to date of service and location of burial for each individual served.

12. Follow up on reimbursement agreements, when appropriate, with contact to probate court, nursing homes, hospitals, etc.

13. Maintain and properly expend any funds provided by Metro or private donors intended for providing headstones, and work with volunteers in laying headstones at cemetery, as circumstances permit.

14. Speak to public and groups on work that Indigent Burial does.

15. Plan on Souls Day Event once a year on the first Thursday of the month.

16. Perform other duties as assigned.

BA or BS

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree. Experience working with volunteers is highly preferred.
