This position is comprised of two roles. The employee’s division of time between these roles will vary as the needs of the program change.

Cash Assistance Specialist:

The employee will work closely with the Cash Assistance Coordinator to assist in orientations, enrollments, eligibility screenings, and case closures for the Refugee Cash Assistance program. The employee will also review income and other eligibility documentation to ensure clients continue to be eligible for the cash assistance program and close cases once the client becomes ineligible.

Public Benefits Caseworker:           

The employee will assist in completing new applications with clients for benefits through the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) as well as assisting clients to follow up on previously submitted applications with the goal of approval of benefits for all eligible clients.

  1. Screen new clients for cash assistance eligibility. For those who are eligible, provide cash assistance orientations and complete the enrollment process.
  2. After enrollment, conduct monthly ongoing eligibility screenings to ensure compliance with the program.
  3. Assist in completing applications with clients for DCBS benefits, including SNAP, Medicaid, and KTAP.
  4. Meet with clients to follow up on pending applications and assist in gathering and submitting necessary documentation.
  5. Document all services provided through online databases, spreadsheets, and physical files and periodically review documentation for errors.
  6. Reports to work regularly and on time.
  7. All other duties as assigned.


This work is performed in an office setting with moderate noise due to computers, printers, and people moving about. This person will also be regularly out in the community providing services to clients.

Bachelor’s degree in Vocational Services, Social Work, or related field or at least two years of experience in job placement, social work, or the provision of other services in the refugee community is required.

  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in an effective manner.
  • Knowledge of a relevant language in addition to English is preferred, but not required.
  • Must be people oriented and able to relate to varied ethnic populations.
  • Must have good organizational and research skills.
  • Must be able to multi-task and be detail oriented.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and be willing to use personal vehicle in driving to various locations within the service area.
  • Public speaking experience preferred.
  • Must have proficient PC skills including Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • The incumbent must be able to maintain the confidentiality of any information she/he encounters.

Education Requirements (Any)

BA in Vocational Services, Social Work, or related field or 2 years in job placement, social work, or other services in the refugee community
