LHS seeks candidates for a self-motivated, hard-working Part-Time Groundskeeper, who is responsible for general grounds and facility maintenance at the Lexington Humane Society (LHS) and Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control (LFACC).

The Groundskeeper uses power equipment and hand tools to maintain landscaping, fencing, and building façade, and completes special projects to update and improve the campus grounds and building exterior.

Candidates must have a flexible schedule and have on-call availability in case of operations or weather emergencies, must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and submit to motor vehicle and background checks. 

This position is part of the Operations team, and it requires a strong commitment to the mission and purpose of Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control (LFACC) and the Lexington Humane Society (LHS).

Job Skills / Requirements

Key Accountabilities:

  • Mows lawns, trims weeds, and rakes leaves as assigned
  • Picks up and removes trash prior to mowing a designated area
  • Empties recycling containers
  • Trims bushes, shrubs, and hedges
  • Prepares soil and plants flowers, bushes, hedges, or shrub.
  • Plants trees and prunes them when necessary
  • Cuts and removes trees as needed
  • Applies fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides as directed
  • Completes snow removal tasks such as salting, shoveling sidewalks and doorways as needed during winter months
  • Operates snowblower or snowplow to clear driveways and parking lots
  • Performs routine maintenance on power equipment
  • Assists with maintenance of all outdoor animal housing
  • Paints and makes repairs to building exterior and signage as assigned
  • Assists with company vehicle maintenance and repair
  • Sorts incoming donations and distributes to designated locations
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Knowledge
    • LHS and LFACC Standard Operating Procedures
    • Operates various types of power equipment including lawnmowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping equipment
    • Uses hand tools required for landscaping
    • Extensive knowledge of landscaping techniques and processes

    • Lifts animals sometimes weighing in excess of 60 lbs
    • Handles constant mental pressure of life and death decision-making by other staff members
