Job Skills / Requirements

The Animal Care Technician (ACT) functions as an expert in providing basic care for the animals at LFACC. The ACT is responsible for maintaining a sanitary, humane environment and providing basic care for the animals with compassion and dedication.

All applicants must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Applicants must have a flexible schedule, be available to work 40 hours each week. The required shift is 9a-6p.

WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION.

Responsibilities for the ACT position include: 

  • Animal Care
    • Prioritizes compassionate and humane care of animals, including dogs, cats, wildlife, and livestock
    • Ensures proper placement and housing of animals in the shelter
    • Ensures proper care, feeding, and watering of animals
    • Ensures all cages have animal identification cards and appropriate signs
    • Ensures regular checks of kennel areas for cleaning needs
    • Interacts with animals in a safe, humane, and respectful manner
    • Remains alert and aware of animal health and conduct
    • Reports any potential health problems/illnesses to the vet tech department
    • Completes all activities consistent with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
    • Assists in animal handling and transport within the facility
    • Bathes animals as needed
    • Exercises animals as needed
    • Provides enrichment as needed
  • Facility Care
    • Ensures proper cleaning and disinfecting of the kennels, cages, and floors throughout the facility
    • Conducts regular checks throughout the day and cleans cages as necessary
    • Assists with grounds, facilities, and building upkeep as directed
    • Organizes and distributes donated items as directed
    • Ensures all public areas are neat and clean
    • Ensures laundry is done every day
    • Disposes of trash as needed
    • Completes other tasks as assigned
  • Customer Service
    • Exemplifies exceptional customer service
    • Assists customers who are looking for a lost pet
    • Provides basic information on animals and politely directs unrelated inquiries to the proper authority
    • Assists volunteers with handling animals
    • Educates the public on the difference between the Lexington Humane Society and Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control
