This is a one-year, non-tenure-track position beginning September 1, 2020. Transylvania University recognizes that a diverse and inclusive community is essential to the fulfillment of our mission as a liberal arts institution. To that end, we seek to attract a diverse faculty skilled in the scholarship of teaching, research and mentorship of students from a variety of backgrounds, a key goal of our Project One initiative. Candidates are encouraged, in their cover letter, to identify their strengths and experiences in creating an inclusive academic community.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching a range of courses in Spanish language, literature and civilization, and working collaboratively with members of the Foreign Language Program to ensure the vibrancy of the Spanish major and minor. The teaching load consists of three courses per semester, plus one short-term course in May that offers additional opportunities for innovative courses (3-3-1). The university also has an excellent faculty development program that competitively funds faculty (and student) scholarly and artistic projects.
A Ph.D. in Spanish Language and Literature or Hispanic Studies preferred. Also preferred is college level teaching experience and specialization in Latin American literature. The applicant must demonstrate a commitment to teaching, collegiality, and working collaboratively with other faculty and with students both within the Foreign Language Program and across disciplines within a liberal arts environment. Transylvania seeks a faculty member with a critical perspective on issues of diversity and multicultural experience.
To begin the application process, please submit one PDF that contains all of the following: your curriculum vitae, your unofficial graduate transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy, and three letters of recommendation (including one that speaks to your dedication to the Spanish language and Hispanic literatures). This PDF, along with your cover letter, may be submitted by clicking the Apply Now button above. If you have confidential letters of recommendation, please have those sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. Deadline for submission is March 15. By April 30th, you will be notified if we would like to interview you. Send questions specific to this search to Professor Qian Gao, search committee chair, at email@example.com.
