Job Summary/Purpose

The Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B) provides high-quality, compassionate, and efficient pre-hospital care and transportation to patients in accordance with local, state, and national protocols. EMT-Bs operate under the direction of KBEMS protocols and medical director and in collaboration with paramedics and other EMS personnel to respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.

 

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

·         Respond promptly to emergency calls for medical assistance, including accidents, sudden illnesses, and other urgent situations.

·         Assess patient conditions and provide basic life support (BLS) interventions such as CPR, bleeding control, splinting, oxygen therapy, and airway management.

·         Transport patients safely to healthcare facilities while monitoring vital signs and providing ongoing care.

·         Document all patient care, assessments, and interventions accurately in accordance with EMS protocols and regulatory guidelines.

·         Maintain and operate emergency vehicles and equipment in a clean, stocked, and ready condition.

·         Communicate effectively with dispatch, hospital personnel, patients, family members, and other emergency responders.

·         Assist with lifting, moving, and transferring patients to stretchers or beds, ensuring proper safety techniques.

·         Participate in EMS training, continuing education, drills, and quality improvement initiatives.

·         Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, safety practices, and infection control standards.

 

Role Minimum Qualifications

 

Required Education

·         High school diploma or equivalent

 

Required Licensure and Certifications               – At Hire

 

·         Active EMT-B license issued through Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services

·         BLS

 

Required Licensure and Certifications               - Post Hire

  • ICS 100/200/700/800
  • Sexual Awareness Training
  • Driver’s Training
  • Pediatric Head Trauma
  • HIV Training

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

·         Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

·         Must be able to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology for the English language.

·         Critical thinking skills.

·         Ability to work under stress.

·         Works cooperatively, communicates effectively.

·         Follows oral and written instructions.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in EMS or healthcare setting
  • Familiarity with electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) systems

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENT

BLS
KY EMT License
