Job Summary/Purpose
The Laboratory Assistant provides direct specimen collection services, ensuring safe and accurate venipuncture, fingerstick, and specimen handling. Follows hospital policies, TJC, and CAP standards for patient identification, infection control, and confidentiality.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
· Performs venipunctures, nasal swabs, and finger sticks using aseptic technique and with as little patient discomfort as possible.
· Verifies positive patient identification.
· Knowledgeable about which color top tube to use and volume of blood needed. Labels test tube immediately after procedure is completed with patient name, room number, date, time, and initials
· Always observe standard precautions; disposes of all sharps in a rigid sharps’ container.
· Cleans and supplies venipuncture trays. Maintains work areas. Order supplies when needed.
· Prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders, and outpatient.
· Washes hands/sanitizes before and after every patient contact.
· Alters or adjusts methods and procedures for neonates, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics.
· Performs quality control testing and instrument checks, then documents results.
· Always observe standard precautions.
· Professionally interacts with all Lab employees, physicians, other hospital employees, administration, and the Pathologist.
· Verifies that proper specimen is being analyzed for the proper patient and the ordered test.
· Performs waived and other approved testing per P&P as directed by Lab manager/supervisor.
· Documents correct information for statistics and billing.
· Stocks and orders supply as needed
· Centrifuges specimens to separate cells from sediment, serum, or supernatant fluids.
· Centrifuges blood specimens and prepare for transport.
Role Minimum Qualifications
Required Education
· High school diploma or equivalent
Required Licensure and Certifications -At Hire
- Certified Phlebotomist Technician (ASCP, AMT, NHA)
Required Licensure and Certifications -Post Hire

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Minimum three (3) years of phlebotomy experience
· Strong knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures and techniques.
· Ability to interpret and analyze technical data and quality control results.
· Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
· Detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and multi-task in a high-volume environment.
· Proficient in using laboratory information systems (LIS) and standard computer applications.
HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENTRequisitos de Educación (Todo)
