Job Skills / Requirements

Job Summary:  

  • Performs laboratory tests and associated support work as directed by the Laboratory Manager, Supervisor, and Chief Operating Officer. 
  • Cooperates and communicates professionally with the medical and nursing staff, and hospital personnel.
  •  Uses technical knowledge to effectively make sound clinical decisions concerning lab issues and to troubleshoot instruments. 
  • As the Lead Technologist, oversight of departmental duties will be their responsibility.  Departmental duties includes:  maintaining the maintenance, inventory, and QC logs, monitor proper gram stain and culture setups, review and monitor proper specimen collection and determination of further testing beyond the initial culture.

Required Education, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor Degree from an approved school of medical laboratory technology.
  • Must provide copy of diploma or transcript.
  • Certified as a MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) from a national certifying agency (ASCP, AMT) preferred.
  • Candidates eligible for Certification must attempt BOC exam a minimum of 2 times per year and provide evidence of attempts.  Failure to do so may result in an evaluation of employment at HMH.
  • Failure to obtain certification will result in an evaluation of employment, including salary, job duties and shifts.
  • CEU’s for those accredited after 2004.
  • Works cooperatively and communicates effectively.
  • Follows oral and written instructions.
  • Initiative, accuracy, and judgment needed to determine the needs of the laboratory.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to make sound clinical decisions based on patient condition and lab results.
  • Computer skills and ability to type.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload and work independently.
  • Excellent customer service. 


Education Requirements (All)

Bachelor of Science

Certification Requirements (All)

ASCP or equivalent preferred
MLS certification through ASCP or equivalent national certifying body
