Must be a RN with one year of either RN or LPN experience to work in the School Health Department; pay $25.30 per hour to commensurate with experience, <23.0 hours per week. Monday thru Friday 4 hours per day; no less than 20 hours per week and no more than 23 hours per week.
Part time, School Health Department.
The Nurse Specialist provides nursing services focusing on the prevention of illness, injury or disability, the promotion of health, and maintenance of the health of individuals and populations. The incumbent works independently within agency guidelines in a variety of settings, including schools, to provide services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provides mandated public health services for the public school system.
• Provides school health services as follows:
o Case management and provision of services for students who require care for chronic illnesses.
o Treatment Coverage [Diabetics, etc.]
o KDE mandated vision screenings for K, 1, 3, & 5
o Immunization Consultation*
o Training of core school staff for conditions/care for students with chronic illnesses
o Training of core staff in each school for daily medication administration and emergency medications
o Medication log review and follow-up
o Infinite Campus condition flags placed and updated for students with health conditions
o Case management of students with chronic healthcare needs
o Vision screenings for IEP/ARCs, as time permits
o ARC, 504 attendance, as time permits
o Communicable Disease Surveillance*
o Health Fairs/ rallies*
o Health Classes*
o Infinite campus data entry for immunizations/ screenings
• Delegates to trained school personnel medication administration.
• Delegates and is available for consultation for insulin administration by LPN.
• Assists with communicable disease management and other health conditions in the home or community settings to particular at-risk or high-risk populations or populations with limited access to care.
• May assist with community assessment.
• Provides or assists in providing a variety of preventive public health nursing services in the community including school health services, immunizations, communicable diseases screenings, individual assessment and community assessments, and other health conditions in community settings to at-risk or high-risk populations or populations with limited access to care.
• May assist with community assessment.
• Identifies cultural, social, and behavioral factors that impact delivery of services.
• Assesses eligibility for health department programs as appropriate.
• Assesses needs of patients and refers to appropriate community agency as needed.
• Assesses and acts appropriately to chemical and biological exposures.
• Provides health care teaching – preventive and therapeutic – appropriate to educational level (and language barriers) and documents in medical record.
• Provides case management by acting as a liaison between parent/ guardian and physician responsible for the student’s health condition. Participates as patient/family advocate.
• Works in an independent role following the guidelines and standing orders contained in the current Clinical Services Guide. (CSG)
• Assists with new staff orientation, students and media.
• Attends staff and committee meetings; attends CEU offerings; collects and organizes statistical information as requested; receives, directs, attends to phone calls;
• Maintains updated CPR/AED/OSHA/FEMA/HIV knowledge
• Participates in special projects as needed.
• Responds to Public Health Emergencies as needed.
One (1) year of experience and a nursing degree (ADN, BSN, Masters) or Nursing Diploma. Experience working as a RN or LPN in one (1) of the following: school health, pediatric care in hospital or clinic, ER or urgent care, home health, public agency such as Health Department.
Current Registered Nurse License and current hands-on CPR required. Requires current and valid driver’s license and use of personal transportation to and from job assignments on a daily basis.
