As a key member of the Aquatics team, this position supervises daily pool activities for patrons and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The purpose of this position is to provide a safe environment for members and program participants.
Job Skills / Requirements
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Model the YMCA character values
- Minimum age of 16
- Current lifeguard certifications required (including Jefferson County Board of Health if required)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Previous lifeguard and/or swim instructor experience preferred
- People centered, service oriented

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Uphold the Mission of the YMCA
- Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures
- Completes all related reports as required by the YMCA of Greater Louisville
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the local Health Department code
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
- Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving
- Performs chemical testing as required by the Aquatics’ Director
- Attends all staff meetings and training as required by the Aquatics’ Director
- Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff
- Maintain all certifications as required to keep the Lifeguard certification current
- Work all assigned shifts and/or follow appropriate substitution policies
- Attends all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Aquatics’ Director
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to pass lifeguard water test
- Must be able to remain alert
- Work in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorine
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations
- Environment may include indoor and/or outdoor pool conditions
- Ability to lift 25 pounds
- Noise level-High
STATUS: Part-time, Non-Exempt
STARTING SALARY: $15.00/hour opening shift only

This is a Part-Time position Mon-Fri 4:30am-9am, Saturday/Sunday 6:30am-10am.
