As a key member of the Aquatics team, a Swim instructor teaches both youth and adults swimming techniques & pool safety, and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The main purpose of this position is to provide a positive role model for members and to create a character-developing atmosphere.

Job Skills / Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum age of 16
Team player with personal commitment to the YMCA Mission, Philosophy, & Character Development Values
People centered, service oriented
YMCA Youth Swim Lesson Instructor preferred, but we will train
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Previous lifeguard experience preferred, but we will train
Must be able to swim and demonstrate strokes
Obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications (within 90 days of employment)

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Uphold the Mission of the YMCA
Must be able to remain alert
Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
Ability to teach with patience and caring attitude
Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations
Must be able to remain in water for long periods of time
Responsible for scheduled classes/shifts & for following appropriate substitutes procedures
Arrive 15 minutes prior to class start time to set up and greet participants
Clean up all equipment and pool deck after classes have ended
Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Aquatics’ Director

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to remain alert
Work in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorine
Must be able to remain in the pool for extended periods of time
Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations
Environment may include indoor and/or outdoor pool conditions
Ability to lift 25 pounds
Noise level-High

STATUS: Part-time, Non-exempt
SALARY RANGE: $10+/hr (based on experience)
